DAY 1 FINAL CHIP COUNTS at the North American Poker Championship
|
19 October 2005
When the dust settled after a great day of poker 214 players were left standing, some in far better shape than others. 203 players were eliminated on the first day. Chau Giang, one of the best cash game players in the world and a WSOP winner has the chip lead as of now.
Play resumes at noon today, and players like Layne Flack (92550 chips in 9th overall) and Jean-Robert Bellande (86025 chips, 14th) are in excellent position. Bellande in the flesh is not someone you want to trifle with by the way - this is not a small man. He looks like a cross between The Rock and Jean Reno (the actor from "The Professional"), only more dangerous. Giang, whom one could challenge at arm wrestling but not high-stakes poker, has 208900 chips after day 1. The chip stacks are so massive because the players started out with 20000 chips. Still, to manage a ten-fold increase after only 5 levels of play is quite a feat.
Other big names who did well include, Jesus Ferguson - I saw Chris late last night at the Bellagio and he appeared in high spirits and full of beans. He was not exactly on his way up to the room to get a full eight hours. He has 76000 chips and is in 22nd, so a little celebrating was certainly warranted.
Mike Matusow and David Oppenheim were both in the top 20 after day 1, and Johnny Chan had a strong showing as well, and will resume in 35th place with plenty of chips in front of him.
I just returned to my room, but then again I`m not competing for the $1 million first prize. I spent my time toying with lesser poker beings at limit games, and making some pocket money that can then be spent lighting up the Strip. I`ll sleep in a couple of days - it never seems that important when you`re in this town.
