DAY 2 Report From The North American Poker Championship

As I type this they are down to the last 45 players at this year`s Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championsip. Doyle was knocked out early today when there were around 200 players left. It was a long day stretching way past midnight, and numerous stars fell pretty swiftly. They paid out the top 100 finishers, and the first to cash pocketed $12,000.
It seems like an awful lot of work for an extra $2,000. If you played in the super-satellite as I did it means that you beat 380 players to get the $10k seat, and then you beat another 300 players over the next two days but still only earned $12k. They paid out too many places in my opinion, diluting the returns. They should have paid out the top 50 only, and started them off at $20,000 for their efforts.
Players who cashed but are out include: Layne Flack, Johnny Chan, David Oppenheim (representing Full Tilt), Chau Giang (our day 1 overnight leader), and Lee Watkinson. Dan Harrington not only has volume 2 of his brilliant no-limit hold`em tournament book out on the shelves, but he is leading by example. As far as I know he is still in and is a huge threat at this discipline. Chris Jesus Ferguson is also still lurking and could win it all. Very consistent player.
As for me I indulged in 30 minutes of loose $15/$30 action at the Bellagio this afternoon, and caught so many cards it was shameful. I doubled up my original stack of $500 in the half hour and stood up immediately. I needed a Spa afternoon, and treated myself to the Bellagio`s fine facilities and a superb therapist, named Merise. But I digress...
Barry Greenstein is still in this event as well, and let`s not forget the much-maligned Kathy Liebert, not as glamorous as Cindy or Jennifer or Evelyn perhaps (and certainly doesn`t have the same cavalcade of drooling admirers), but her tournament results speak volumes. She`s there, and chances are another big payday looms.
