DOYLE BRUNSON NORTH AMERICAN POKER CHAMPIONSHIP - FINAL TABLE
|
22 October 2005
Well, it`s a brutal final table, with 3 phenomenal players left out of the final 6. The other three players will need a lot of good fortune to win this event, and it should be a great way to cap off the Bellagio Festa Al Lago. It`s hard to know who the favorite is going in: Dan Harrington, Gavin Smith, and chip leader Minh Ly all have good reason to feel confident.
Harrington is easily the best tournament poker player of the three, in fact I would rate him as the best no limit hold`em tournament poker player in the world, or at least the most thoughtful. He has my money if betting is involved. Minh Ly is super-aggressive, and enjoyed a superb World Series Of Poker run. He cashed in 4 events, finishing second to Doyle Brunson in one of them and managing an incredible 19th place finish in the main event. Gavin Smith is one player you might not have heard of, but this guy is on fire in 2005. He won the Mriage WPT event, another no-limit event at the Mirage leading up that win, and then cashed 4 times in the WSOP as well. On his day he is just as aggressive as Ly.
I`m in the middle of Volume 2 of Harrington`s guide to hold`em tournament play and for that reason alone I`m rooting for him. His approach to the game is so lucid and intelligent that he deserves to win this thing - some of the advice in this book will make me a lot of money going forward, so it only makes sense that the author should profit to an even greater degree as well.
On a personal note I leave Vegas under a cloud. Sure I did well in the Festa, but then I managed to sit down in a $30/$60 game where there was only one stranger at the table (me) and drop $1,300 in 2 hours. Why do I play cash games when I know I am a far better tournament player? Why? Arrogance, Impatience, Greed, and Foolishness would make up my quartet of choice. If you ever see me sitting in a limit cash game feel free to come up to me, shake me vigorously, and scoop up all my cash when it hits the floor. If you`re a female poker player the sequence is slightly different: For the ladies I have been known to drop my cash prior to the vigorous shaking.
Seriously, I am nothing more than a hirsute ATM when it comes to cash games at these levels because other players are so loose and carefree that they put me on tilt and then they put me away. Today alone: pocket Aces cracked by 56 when the board comes 7-6-9-2-8. Followed by pocket Aces cracked by 7T (suited this time) when the board comes K-T-3-8-7. Who are these people? I could continue but really, who cares? I don`t and I`m the one typing it wondering what I could have bought for $1,300 in Vegas - a better time than watching some half-witted troglodyte (if this is being read to you by someone, you slack-jawed cretin, you know who you are!) call down my AJ top two-pair with his runner-runner flush draw, I guarantee that much.
So I won`t be hanging around to cover the final table live. I`ll be at home playing online in an attempt to qualify for the Aussie Millions on Poker.com, and watching my talented disciple, the first of 12 perhaps (a fisher of fish they call me for all of you religious types who enjoy the cards), skinning them alive in $10 sit and go`s as he begins his poker pilgrim`s progress to enlightenment.
