EXPERT VIEW - A Tough Day Of Online Poker
|
24 October 2005
Playing online poker for a living can be a grind, and emotionally draining as well. When your opponent sucks out on a 23:1 shot on the river and you move to another online tournament only to have yet another preposterous longshot arrive at your direct expense, well let`s just say it takes as much out of you as watching "Beaches" and "Steel Magnolias" back-to-back, and it`s equally nauseating.
Now, a full disclosure at the outset of this post - I ended the weekend up, but only by a couple of hundred dollars, which is a lot like breaking even. This should be contrasted with Daniel Negreanu`s latest blog where he loses $150,000 playing in the big game in Bobby`s room (that`s in the Bellagio card room) and opines that dropping 150 dimes is a lot like breaking even. We have different standards Daniel and I, and while I cannot claim to play $4000/$8000 mixed games, I can say that I was ever so close to claiming my rightful satellite seat for the Aussie Poker Millions.
It`s great to play against terrible players, at least 22 out of 23 times on average. It`s that 23rd time, when the seat is on the line and you hold AK to his JK with the board showing A-J-2-3 that it hurts. My bet of 2500 chips(!) with the blinds at only 100/200 putting him all-in should have been a signal that his middle pair was no good. Or how about the fact that I raised 800 preflop, and bet out for another 1000 after the flop? Surely at some point this guy thought to himself, "hey, I could be beaten here". But wait, he went on to say, smart fellow that he must be, there are still 2 Jacks left in the deck! Why, I should definitely call for my last 2500 chips. And so it came to pass that a Jack landed on the river, and while I still had 1080 chips left after that debacle my heart was no longer in it.
FreeZBee, if you ever happen to come across this blog you should know that in my heart I can never forgive you for denying me a trip to Australia, a trip that you will certainly never qualify for in this lifetime, for you are nothing more than a link between our modern age and a bygone time, the Paleolithic era to be exact. You are to poker what Carrot Top is to comedy, only the way you play poker is a lot funnier than anything that moron could accomplish.
Best result of the weekend: Winning a $250 sit `n go (six-handed) on Caribbean Sun poker.
Worst results of the weekend: All the other tournaments (3) that I played in with no reward.
