Playing at the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship
|
06 October 2005
The Festa al Lago IV starts at the Bellagio in two days time this coming Friday. It culminates with a World Poker Tour event, the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship. My intention is top play in this event, my first WPT event, and hopefully to cash.
My big problem is finding the $10,000 needed to purchase a seat for this event. My solution is to fly down on Sunday night, play in satellites on Monday, and try to ease in the cheap way. A wise poker writer, a blogger, once remarked that if you can`t qualify for the main event by winning one of three satellites then odds are you wouldn`t have been able to compete in the main event. After the third failure the writing is on the wall - you`re outclassed and shouldn`t waste more money trying to qualify.
I`m going to take this a step further and say that if you can`t cut the mustard after two satellites you should quit, and by you I mean myself because I cannot afford to play in the third qualifier anyway. As all of you know I have a perfect record at the Bellagio in no-limit tournaments, with 1 win in my only event. Okay, so that was only a $500 + $40 event, but I did best 50 opponents, and I`m clearly course and distance suited.
I`m going to take $2,200.00 of the profits from that last trip to Vegas and reinvest it in a quest to become a television celebrity. Think of the exposure for the Insider. Imagine the consoling hug from Courtney Friel when I am eliminated at the final table. Consider the cash...
Last year`s event, at Festa al Lago III, saw Carlos Mortensen dispel rumors that he is one of the most overrated winners of the World Series Of Poker main event by taking 1st place against a very tough field. Mortensen is nowhere near as bad a player as Robert Varkonyi, I could spell check his name for SEO purposes but who is going to search for this guy? And let`s not even mention Moneymaker, a true lottery winner. As for other winners who have not followed through, Huck Seed has to be a name worth mentioning as of course is "Noel" Furlong, a dire no-limit player who somehow stumbled into the greatest run of lucky cards ever seen at that event.
Okay, so Mortensen is not a one-hit wonder, he isn`t the Toni Basil of poker, and he played well to beat out Erik Seidel, Hung La, and a bunch of guys named Pham at the final table. He won`t repeat this year, and I say that not only because I will be there (sarcasm people), but also because it is impossible to repeat when the fields are this strong. The gods of poker do not permit that kind of good fortune, surely?
Anyway, I`ll be there, and will blog daily regardless of the highs or lows - and you can live vicariously through my tiny efforts to make it as a poker pro.
