Don`t Be Afraid To Fold Tempting Hands That Only Cause Trouble
|
22 November 2005
Starting hands like QK, JQ, Ax, and little pairs can be played for big wins under ideal circumstances, but generally they tend to cost Novice players a lot of money. They are the toughest hands to bet, and when you are put under pressure it is often hard to make the right play, even if you`re an expert. If there is already a big bet or several callers in the pot before you, do not be afraid to muck these tempting hands pre-flop.
As a simple exercise I want you to fold these hands 10 times in a row, and then jot down the results of each hand. You`ll be surprised to see that you do not win enough times to make it profitable, unless you are fortunate enough to flop a monster hand that also makes another player a very strong second-best hand.
There are of course contexts in which it is correct to play small pairs or medium-strength hands, but you need to have a good read on your opponents, and be proficient at board texture awareness. In time you will learn enough to win chips overall when holding these type of hands, but at first a conservative approach will reap the biggest rewards, especially when your opponents are weak players.
