EXPERT VIEW - Daniel Books A Win, As Do I!

06 November 2005

Daniel Negreanu finished the High Stakes Poker show strong by winning over $400,000 on the last day, the biggest single win of the entire event. However, he still ended up losing a quarter of a MILLION dollars overall. I booked a win today as well. A $500 Sit and Go ($5000 prize pool) - so even though I only won $2,500 it does mean I am back up for the month.

The poker that they played at the Golden Nugget will be shown on GSN starting in January 2006. It should be fun. Apparently Phil Hellmuth played on the last day and all the other players were more excited than the time Ben Affleck wandered into the Commerce looking for a little action. Phil not only dropped a couple hundred thousand but bitched and moaned throughout, it should make for epic television.

It is interesting to note that the other players consider Phil to be soft in these cash games. I would like it on record that I consider Daniel to be a tremendous talent and a gifted poker player, although his grasp of reality is tenuous at best. His attitude of losing $250k and considering it almost like a win because he WAS down $750k is comical. He can sure play poker though.

I played two fantastic hands in my "little" $5k tournament tonight. The first hand saw me with 67 suited out of position. I called the blind for 100 chips but a player immediately to my left made it 400 to go. We both had the same amount of chips, roughly, as it was early in the event. When the big blind called I decided to take the flop. It left me with 2200 chips, so I could afford it.

The flop came 5-4-8 with two diamonds. The big blind checked. I thought about the mentality of the pre-flop raiser. Like most online poker players I figured he would be unable to get away from an overpair, especially a big one like QQ or KK, which is what I hoped he held. In that case my only move was all-in for the full 2100. I reasoned that this was my best chance of getting paid off. He called instantly and flipped over QQ! The turn was a 2 and the hand was over. I doubled through to 5500 and felt great.

The second hand was more of an instinct play. The cut-off seat raised to 350. Blinds were still 50-100 and I was in the small blind with TT. I re-raised to 800 and he just flat called. My mind was racing through possible hands he might have. If he had KK or AA he would have re-raised all-in. If he had AK or AQ he might have pushed as well. The fact that he just called probably meant he had a medium pair, and I was hoping it wasn`t JJ.

The flop came Q-4-2 rainbow. I decided to check. He went all-in for over 2000 chips. I thought that if he had AQ or KQ he would have bet a smaller amount showing more confidence in his hand. If he had JJ he might have made this play but I was pretty sure he held either a small pair that hadn`t hit the flop or AK. I called. He turned over 99, and my tens held up to knock him out.

From then on I never looked back and I played good poker heads-up to win pretty easily in the end. I`m very interested in using the all-in move as a type of reverse bluff; where you overbet inducing players to think you might be weak when in fact you are very strong. This only works at a very high level of tournament poker, by the way, and should still only be used sparingly...
