EXPERT VIEW - Back To My Best In Online Tournament Play

11 December 2005

November was a barren and cold month for my online poker, and with no opportunity to beat a hasty retreat to Vegas for their big tournaments I was left to pick apart the holes in my game (quite a few), and begin anew in December.

Some of my more obvious errors included a willingness to gamble for a large percentage of my stack, and at times my entire stack, when I had the worst of it or at best a 50/50 chance to double through. You don`t want to put yourself in those positions, and it tends to reveal a lack of focus and concentration. I was also playing a lot of marginal hands and playing them too passively as well, a rookie error that I have written about in more detail in my latest column.

I flew down to South Africa a few days ago to spend some time in the sun, and it gave me a chance to get away from poker for a few days altogether - and the break has done me good. I got back into the swing of things with a nice Sit N Go effort today at Pokerroom.com, winning it without much fuss. One player who jumped out to a big chip lead early on insisted on showing his cards whenever he won a hand where there was no showdown. I cannot emphasise enough what a HUGE ERROR this is. If there is a good player at the table, he will use this information later on to crush you.

That`s exactly what I was able to do with this person. I learned how much he valued Ax suited preflop, how he played small pairs, and when he was prepared to back down from a hand. It is ridiculous to show your cards, unless it is a complete bluff and you want to aggravate someone, and even that it a cheap move in my opinion - I never do it, but I can see there is a small edge there.

Anyway, I`m playing in another big online tournament right now, and will update the blog if I cash or go deep.
