Student Comments
I took a couple of weeks off from poker during December whilst on vacation. This was probably great timing as I felt my poker wasn`t going anywhere. I player a few $5 games during the holidays and it didn`t go too badly.

So this is the start of The Experiment in 2006 for me. Back to $10 Sit & Go`s (and I`ll try some $20`s soon). After Marc was also off line for a while, this is the first monitored game in a while. I felt I really played well, and even for periods where the cards were not coming. I felt the table was quite weak. Everything went pretty OK until heads up where I just didn`t feel in control. My opponent got pretty lucky though, as I called his all-in with pocket Ace`s against 10s. He drew a 10 on the river.

Notable Hands
I laid down K7 when the pot odds were way good enough to call a small raise and would have drawn a full house. However, its always great to look at these hands in hindsight!

Coach Comments
Ryan impressed me with his overall play. He is a naturally cautious player, but he`s quick to learn that rocks get thrown around at the end of the day, so for the most part he is able to look for action. He made two bad laydowns where his cautiousness got the better of him. In both instances he held rags, but his position and the pot size REQUIRED a call. Instead he folded and both times flopped full-houses! That`s poker. The important point is NOT THE OUTCOME. The fact that he would have won both hands is asbolutely irrelevant. He should have called because he had the odds to do so - what happened after that is not the issue.

I think it is easier to coach someone thoughtful whose inclination is not to gamble, as opposed to a maniac or a guy who loves to see every flop just because it`s there. So, we can build on this performance. Beyond those two hands he was aggressive when he needed to be, knocked out 4 players all by himself with smart, tough play, and was ultimately unlucky to come second. Also not a relevant point by the way - the key is that he put himself in a position to win, and was one card away from doing just that. That last card - the T on the river went against him, but more times than not he will win in those situations, and that`s what matters most. Good effort.
