There aren`t too many games in my home town but some crowd have started a local league. You earn point every time you play. At the end of a ten week season, there will be a grand final event and the winner will get a WPT seat.

I arrived early for registration at the venue, a club about 30 minutes from where I live. I had to fight my way through a couple of hundred old ladies who had just finished a bingo tournament to get to the registration desk. Enough to put me in a bad mood. There was a queue of about 50 people waiting to register for the NL Hold`em tournament so I decided to grab a beer to accompany me to the front of the queue (decided to drink something different - bad idea, the stuff was bitter as hell). Once registered there was about a 30 minute wait and I reverted back to my normal brew which made me feel much better already.

Once seated, I sized up the competition and felt quite good. However, a young man arrived late at the table and I immediately felt that this guy was to be watched carefully when he took a seat to my right. The starting stack was only $550 in chips so I figured you have to build your stack up by being aggressive early on. Anyway, that was my strategy.

First hand, laid down. Second hand, under the gun, I raise with KQ off suit (about 3 times the big blind). The table folds and my friend to the right calls from the big blind. The flop comes, hello, KQQ. Hello baby. He checks. I bet $200. He calls. Turn comes 3d. He checks again. I bet all in. He calls immediately and turns over AQ! Shit. No ace, no ace! And the river ladies and gentlemen! An A!

So a long trip, a long wait and all for that. Anyway I`ll head back next week and try again! Definitely my worst bad beat to date in my short poker career.

Notable Hands
It was not notable.

Coach Comments
The main problem with this tournament, putting aside the bad beat, which was really unavoidable given the board (he had every right to call the all-in, and then got very lucky - it happens), is the starting stacks. They are far too small to allow for good play, and will ensure that luck plays a greater role than skill. We want to try and avoid those tournaments if possible, because it takes away the edge we have.
