Student Comments
This was my first $30 tournament. Initially I didn`t sense much difference between this level and the $20 level. However, I soon found out that it was much more difficult to bet players out of the hand, and I was getting re-raised almost every time if I raised from early position. There were two very aggressive players. One of them practically re-raised every hand. I got hurt early on with pocket 10s. I felt I was leading after the flop (9xx). I got called all the way to the river, which was J. Checked on the river, so did he and showed J9off. Can`t believe he called all the way through without having a straight draw. Played really tight after that but the cards did not come. I was short stacked and made a stupid move with KQ off after the flop came Q7x. I went all in and got called by a set of 7`s.

Coach Comments
The two hands that Ryan discussed here are both interesting - in the first example Ryan baulked at pushing hard even though he held an overpair to the board. It turned out he was in front but failed to bet enough to push the guy out of the hand, and he caught up on the river. Next time out he made the opposite decision, pushing with top pair on the board only to run into a set, which in itself is unlucky. But, my point is this: top pair on the board is less powerful than an overpair to the board, The latter hand needs to be played aggressively, especially if it is a hand like Tens, where future cards could overtake it. But this is all a matter of feel - both hands were marginal and could have gone either way...
