Dealing With A Losing Streak

17 February 2006

Ryan has had a tough week with some poor results following on from a few glorious weeks where winning looked like the only option. How to play through these bad streaks is an important lesson to learn.

Every poker player will have plenty of losing sessions and plenty of losing months as well. The key is how you adapt to these streaks. Your confidence is key in poker. When you`re running well it`s like you can win with any two cards, and when you go cold even the sight of rolled-up Aces fills you with dread, because you just know they`re going to get cracked. Confidence can make all the difference, and it has to be kept separate from your bottom-line results. Don`t be delusional - if you lose every time there is no reason to be confident, and you have to work on your game. But, focus your memory on sessions where you know you played brilliant poker, and filter out the losses.

You can control your state of mind in poker. If you`re feeling miserable, burnt-out or unlucky then DON`T PLAY. Poker will still be there next week and your hunger will return. Play only when you have the passion and the belief that you can beat the game. If it`s going badly stand up and leave. Simple as that.

Keep the big picture in mind. Ryan`s bankroll is all that matters - bottom line, he is winning nicely and progressing. These glitches along the way simply do not mean anything. Long-term vision and a healthy, positive attitude, plus gaining experience all the time (both good and bad experiences) will turn you into a poker winner.
