I have been reading and re-reading Dan Harrington`s book for the past couple of weeks. After a dismal week of poker. I sat down and wrote down a few rules before playing this tournament:

1. Limit limping in with marginal hands to late position, and only a limited number of times

2. If I missed the flop, only make a continuation bet if I am sure the remaining players are weak and relatively sure that the flop did not help them. Else check and fold if there is a bet that seems convincing enough.

3. Respect all bets and talk myself out of believing a bet is a bluff.

In other words, get back to the tight game, don`t chase unlikely draws, and play the pot odds properly.

It worked a dream. I have about 14000 chips with two other players left. Again, projecting a strong table image early on seems so important. I completely dominated heads up when realizing how week my opponents was.

The journey to become a top-class poker player is long and very tough - I don`t kid myself into believing that my own journey is anywhere near the end, and for someone who has only played for a few months it is important to comprehend this. Ryan puts himself under a lot of pressure, which is good, and his results show that he is both talented and dedicated, but too much pressure can have a negative impact.

I was glad to see that he not only went back down a stakes level, but he also simplified his game plan and returned to the style of play that works for him. On this journey I want him to experiment with different styles, and to be aware of all forms of poker strategy. He should play a tournament like a rock, and another like a maniac, and ideally when he reaches Level 7 he will be able to mix up his game at will. A strong table image is important, and an unpredictable and strong table image is the absolute ultimate.

This was a hard week, but not altogether unexpected as he just moved up to Level 4 (very quickly I might add) and he still has a lot to learn. But he is already holding his own, which is altogether expected!
