EXPERT VIEW - Don`t Sweat Heads Up Games In SNG`s

05 March 2006

I had a good weekend playing SNGs even though my two results both show that I finished 2nd. The first one was a 20-player SNG ($100 + $8) and the second was a 10-player SNG ($100 + $8) both on Pokerroom.com, the undisputed king of the Sit And Go, Sit `N Go, SNG (call it what you will, those Swedes know how to run a Sit & Go!)

In the first tournament I was short-stacked badly coming into the final 10, coming 10th by a long way at that stage. The blinds moved up swiftly to 150/300 and I sat there with 1200 chips. I`ve read my Harrington - both volumes - the bible of tournament poker at this stage (until I get to a point where I can put down my subtle refinements to his theories, which will only happen when I win a WSOP tournament and can put money where my mouth is), so basically I knew that I had only one move and that was all-in based on the proportion of my stack to the blinds.

When I got to the heads-up stage I was behind in chips and made one of those 50/50 moves Ax against 55 and lost to the Ace. Next time round in the 10 player sit and go I entered heads-up play dead even. I went all-in by with AJ against my opponent`s A5, and the flop came 2-3-4. LOL, as those Internet wits would say.

My point is that you must focus on getting to the payout structure and then trust in luck, the Lord, blind chance, whatever you worship, to get you through to the winner`s circle. You`re only two back-to-back wins away from taking over in heads-up, and it can happen with any two live cards (or even one live card as my opponent proved tonight).

Don`t sweat that stuff, because there isn`t much you can do about it. Eventually, if you play well and go in with 75/25 advantages you will win 3 of 4 S&Gs and get the profit you deserve...
