EXPERT VIEW - Folding Pocket Aces
|
12 March 2006
It`s one of those watershed moments in a poker player`s life - folding pocket Aces, that talismanic hand, when you know that you`re way behind or already beaten. Can you do it? There was a moment in a Sit&Go Tournament last night when I had to do it...and now you can play along and see if I made the right decision!
The context of the tournament is important as always. It was very early on in the event - still Level 1 of blinds (10/20, starting stacks are 2000). Everyone is comfortable although I suffered a slight hit early on and had only 1800 chips. The other players in the hand were both around the 2000 mark.
I was on the button when the pocket Aces arrived (As and Ac). One player had limped in for 20. I raised it to 90. The small blind called quickly. The big blind folded, and the limper called. The pot now contained 290 chips.
The flop came 5d-6d-8h and that`s when all hell broke loose.
The small blind bet out 400 chips! The limper thought about it and raised it to 1000 chips! What do you do with those Aces now?
The main problem was that I didn`t really have a read on either player. I figured that the small blind was on a draw of some kind. But what about the limper? The chances of facing two pair, a set (more likely), or a made straight were too great. Plus it was very early on and not worth getting involved in a firefight right then. Right or wrong?
Read on to see the kind of mooks and fools I encounter on a daily basis in my chosen career. Keep in mind, this was a $200 SNG, and not some mickey mouse game.
The small blind re-raised all-in. The limper called. They both turn over....77!! And then, because they are bloody idiots they both type in LOL and NH and all the other inane acronyms that online poker players love to splooge all over my screen to annoy me.
So, did I fold the winning hand? Of course. There was no 4 or 9 or 7 to make me feel happy about life. But, I still think folding was the correct play here. If you disagree with me post a comment and tell me why...
