EXPERT VIEW - Playing The Gavin Smith Way Pays Off Huge!

08 March 2006

Last night I came home very late, and I had enjoyed a snifter or two of port at one or two local watering holes (full disclosure on this blog), but I really wanted to play poker on my new laptop. I found a $50 SNG on Pokerroom.com, the ideal size game when you can barely focus on the screen.

I`ve been thinking about Gavin Smith`s style of playing and wanted to try and incorporate it into my natural game - what better time then when I`m blind drunk I ask ya? In poor position I raised 4x the big blind with 59, suited mind you. I get two callers, one behind me in the blinds, and one on the button.

The flop comes 3 - A - A

Check to me, I bet 75% of the pot. The button folds. The blind calls behind me.

The turn is a 4. The blind checks, and I now know he wants to trap me. I check as well.

The river is a beautiful 2. He bets out pretty big, and I calmly raise him all-in. He shows A-9 just before being booted off the table.

He made two errors. One, playing with A9 in the first place against a raise out of position. Two, on the flop he didn`t check-raise me, which would have ended the hand there and then. He needs to establish that A quickly, or at least bet out big on the turn (a third mistake). But he feared my pre-flop raise, not realizing that I was pulling a Gavin Smith.

By the time we were down to 5 players I had 16000 of the 20000 chips! I then typed in: "You guys are just lucky that I`m drunk out of my mind, otherwise this could get embarrassing." Charming. But it worked well. I stormed to an easy victory. I`d like to thank Gavin + the good people who produce Captain Morgan for making it all possible.
