Student Comments
Although it is hard to swallow a bad run, it does make me chuckle when I think how similar poker can be to life. When you`re flying high, you sometimes don`t see the bumps when they come your way. I have realized that I am a "momentum" player. I am not sure whether this is good or bad, but I do feel like when I am on a roll, my judgment and decision making seems better. I find a bit of desperation creeping into my game when things are not going my way.

This was a pretty crap week on the whole, with the only shining light being a fairly solid finish in a multi table tournament. Here`s an overview of how the week went:

1. Played my first $50 buy-in game and found it heavy going. I didn`t get much in the way of starting hands and started limping in with rubbish and got into trouble with marginal hands. In general found the action to be a lot tougher, and often got re raised. Finished 5th, but really just hung around.

2. $20 Sit & Go - continued playing crap, weak poker. Went down to $200 in chips and pulled off a couple of spectacular all-ins. Gave myself a good talking to, tightened things up and steamrolled it. Felt a lot better.

3. Marc decided that we should play a $20 multi table tournament and he would monitor and provide input. Started really well and made some very good calls, a couple of good steals and one or two good traps. The cards were coming which helped. Reached the break with around 10000 chips. After the break though things took a turn for the worse. Got a run of really bad cards and for some reason ended up at the table with all the chip leaders and some serious trash talkers (I see the biggest trash talker went on to win the thing). I just couldn`t make a move and eventually went all in with AQ, got called by AT and he sucked out a straight. Finished 17.

4. $30 Sit & Go. Sat and went.

5. $30 Sit & Go. Went a bit better. Sat for longer (5th). Again tried to keep with a tight strategy but you need some cards. Speculated once by calling a raise with 22 and flopped a set. Laid a nice trap, but that was all that was worth remembering

6. Regular cash game. The regular crowd weren`t all there. A new player joined us and took ALL the money. He was SUPER aggressive. Raised in late position on just about every hand, even after a raise. Could not get a read on him, and whenever one of us decided to call him, he seemed to hit his hand. $40 gone.

Coach Comments
I have put detailed comments about Ryan`s progress in the other blog he posted on March 11, and here I want to discuss his play in the multi-table tournament, which I monitored.

A multi-table tournament is broken down into three distinct phases, in my opinion. The first phase is all about survival and small but steady increases to your stack. It ends at the first break. The second phase is the most important. I call it the "moving hour". You have to make your move here and increase your chip stack substantially. The third phase is when you are in the money, and you need to alter your play once again in order to win it all.

Most multi-table tournaments online are completed in 3 hours, so it`s a handy way to split up the event in your own mind.

In this particular multi-table tournament Ryan played exceptionally well in the first hour and ended phase 1 in 2nd place overall (there were 120 players at the outset). Half the field was eliminated and he was sitting pretty. But, for some reason I often find that peaking too early in these tournaments, while never a bad thing (it`s never a bad thing to have the chip lead at any time) can sometimes be as much of a curse as it is a blessing.

In the crucial second session Ryan couldn`t make a move. He had the chips but not the cards, and perhaps was too conservative, although any moves he did make were thwarted. The hand that cost him dearly was the AQ / AT affair, which he played perfectly. At the end of the day the whole tournament came down to this hand, and he was 72% to win it, so what more can you ask for other than no good fortune for the other guy?

He played great poker throughout and put himself in a position to cash in and possibly win. Sure he came 17th and that`s hard to take - playing for 2 hours and coming out of it with a loss - but 3 times out of 4 he would have won that hand and been amongst the chip leaders going into the last hour...that`s poker and that`s also a lot of progess from my vantage point. You`re getting there, Ryan!
