Student Comments
The week started off relatively poorly. I decided to try a multi table tournament, and entered a $5+1 tournament at Sun Poker. I just missed getting to the break but I still find it very hard to get ahead in these games. I immediately entered another and things didn`t go all that much better. Even though playing these tournaments is not the focus, I do want to spend some time improving my play in these.

I went back to the $20 Sit&Go level, and got knocked out 4th in the bubble. KQ suited wasn`t enough when I hit the flush and raised all-in. The river complete the flush, A high for another player.

I moved up to the $30 level and played a very interesting tournament. I  was all-in for my last 200 chips but managed to hang on for second (although I was short-stacked the whole way through). In my second $30 game of the week I came 3rd.

Thursday night saw my now regular cash game ($20 buy-in, fixed blinds with re-buys). I didn`t re-buy and walked away with $70 profit.

Notable Hands
Pulled off an outrageous bluff during the cash game this week. In retrospect it was a bit insane, but it worked because of a really good read. I play tight aggressive in these games and have established a reputation as tight player. I was in a pot with a guy whom I knew was very tight. I was dealt AT suited on the button, and raised 4 times the big blind before the flop after a couple of limpers. The big blind called, and the other 2 folded. At this stage I put him on AK, or a high pair.

The flop didn`t help me at all, he checked, but I made a probe bet of about 1/3 of the pot. He called. On this basis I eliminated the over pair (knowing him he would have raised if he held the over pair or if he hit a set), and figured he put me on AX, with a face card. The turn was a low card, and the board was a full rainbow. I decided to bet half the pot after he checked, as I was convinced it didn`t help him. He just called and I figured him for AQ or AJ. The river was an A, and I decided to check to see what he was going to do. He bet the full pot, but by now I figured he had AJ. Mistake, I should have bet it, but I was so convinced of the AJ that I decided to bluff him into thinking I held AQ / AK. I raised three times his bet and he folded, but showed his AJ! Crazy move, but I felt I read him so well, and knew how tight he plays and that he wouldn`t call with that hand.

Coach Comments
This was a fantastic week for our Student. In fact he exceeded all expectations and banked a huge profit. When you increase your bankroll by 25% in a single week it is an achievement of note. The best news is that he is making quality reads in a live-game situation. Bricks & Mortar poker is a slightly different animal to online poker - note I said "slightly" different, because unlike a lot of other players I think the differences are LESS significant. The key to poker is to understand betting patterns, and to interpret players` actions based primarily on how and when they bet. Watching them gives you extra clues, but those clues can also be deceptive and unhelpful. Online poker focuses you if you play well, and Ryan is playing very well right now.

Because he started out as an online player, and has learned the game from a mathematical perspective he is ideally positioned to do very well in live-games because those tells will be additional information rather than primary information, and he won`t get wrapped up in reading individuals. It`s going very well right now! Let`s keep it up...
