You Can Learn To Play Poker Online
|
05 March 2006
The point of the Experiment is to turn a novice into a top-class poker player. We believe that this transformation can occur primarily through playing poker online. This flies in the face of conventional wisdom, which likes to separate online poker from live-game face to face poker as though they`re two different games.
My opinion is that nothing could be further from the truth, and if you establish your poker strategies in an online environment they will translate into successful poker regardless of the context. Online poker is far more volatile, because you see a lot more hands and you deal with far more loose / aggressive players. You see crazy boards in online poker, and will have to deal with terrible play by opponents. That being said, if you play poker based on pot odds, implied pot odds, and react based on the betting patterns of your opponents, you will develop the PRIMARY skill-set needed to win at this game.
Online poker forces you to think about the game in an abstract purely analytical way. You do not see body language, hear conversation, watch pupils dilate. You cannot interpret a delay in action with any degree of certainty, and instinctual reads on a psychological level are also few and far between. But, you can accurately define other players based on the bets they make, when they make them, and you must act according to the mathematical circumstances presented to you with each new hand.
If you start out playing only online poker, which is basically what we have done with our student Ryan in the Experiment, you will strengthen these aspects of your game. You will not get emotional in the sense that you target individuals who rub you up the wrong way, which always happens in live games. You will not have the opportunity to judge on a personal basis, at least not to the same extent. You will say to yourself "this player is a maniac, the name to his left is a rock, and the name to his right is a calling station weakling", but these judgements will stem from betting patterns and seeing their hands. It will not come from their physical behaviour.
Remember that when you confront a pro his physical behaviour is INCREDIBLY DECEPTIVE. They talk to get a reaction, they pretend to be drunk to get you to loosen up, they act like obnoxious egomanaics in order to get you to change your game. But if you started out online you only care about the bet and the board - everything else can be filtered out, and you can go far with that ability!
