EXPERT VIEW - Playing Online For $1 Million
|
24 April 2006
The online poker explosion shows no signs of abating, and there are incredible tournaments and opportunities on a weekly basis. Poker Stars held a $1 million guaranteed tournament yesterday with a buy-in of only $200 +$15! I decided to take my shot along with 5700 others.
Let`s think about how amazing this is for just a second. Ten years ago a $1 million poker tournament made headline news, happened once a year in Las Vegas, and was the exclusive playground of the biggest gamblers in the world. One year ago the fact that over 5000 poker players gathered at the World Series Of Poker was also considered newsworthy in terms of the sheer size of the event.
In online poker a single poker room is able to bring together that many players for stakes of over $1 million (the tournament was over-subscribed and ended up being worth $1.1 million), and they can do this with ease every single Sunday of the year.
Online poker offers everyone the dream of turning $215 into a six figure payday. I have the same dream as all the other poker players and entered full of confidence.
In the first hour I played very well and moved from a starting stack of $2500 to $6500. I played relatively few hands, doubled up early on when I flopped a small set and knocked out pocket Aces, and still felt good.
In the second hour things went even better. I doubled up and took down a very big pot with Q4 against AT (played very badly by the AT I might add), and was running 30th in the event, with less than 1000 of the original starting field left.
But then disaster struck! A decent player made a standard raise out of position. he was called by a very loose and weak player to my immediate right. The action was on me and I had QQ. I wanted to isolate the weak player and pushed all-in. The original raiser called as did the weak player. The weakling flipped over 66 (idiot), while the first speaker had....KK. I had him covered in terms of chips, and when his Kings held up to win I was still alive but all my momentum was gone. I had less than 6000 chips (down from 16000) and never recovered.
I finished just out of the money, but will definitely try again. For those of you who haven`t played in one of these massive events I would recommend it as a learning experience but not as a wise financial investment. It is fun though.
