Student Comments
After my disappointing previous week, things have improved in the last week. I identified a few shortcomings in my game and by and large feel like I am addressing them (not all of the time, but I have improved). These were:
  • Limping in too often with marginal hands and getting into trouble and
  • Not getting away from a good starting hand when I know I`m beat.
  1. Monday - $20, 5 handed game at Paradise Poker. Decided to start the week with a lower buy-in tournament and I had limited time. I pretty much dominated playing a very tight game. 1st.
  2. Tuesday - I have started to play in a new free league run in the pubs in my local city. Last week I finished seventh and this week third. There are, surprisingly, a few very good players but most are novice phone booths (they call everything). It started very well for me. I was dealt AA, AK and AK in my first three hands. I knocked one player out and won two large pots. I played quite tight from there (although not as tight as normal as the blinds move quite quickly. I made the final table with about the average stack size and stayed tight. I reached the final three with about equal chips to one other player, with the big stack about twice our size. This is where I had a brain explosion. I checked the big blind with junk, and flopped middle pair.  I checked and he checked. The turn looked pretty harmless so I decided to bluff and go all in. He called and also had middle pair but with the better kicker. Damn stupid move.
  3. Wednesday - $30 buy in, 10 handed - 2nd. Played very solid poker. Reached heads up with a very aggressive player. We had equal stacks. He raised pre-flop, I went all in with AJ. He called with AT and flopped a T.
  4. Thursday - $30 tournament - 7th. Another brain explosion. I bluffed all-in to try and steal a huge pot with one other player in the running. Needless to say I was called.
  5. Saturday - $30 tournament - 3rd (this is becoming a bad habit). I was very happy with my play. I got to the final three with the chip lead, but suffered a couple of blows with good hands missing the flop (put in big raises pre-flop). I semi-bluffed with middle pair after the flop with a big bet. I had a caller. The turn looked harmless so I continued to bet. He called again. The river came and I went all in. He called and had sucked out top pair on the river. I have no idea how he could have called me down but some people do strange things (hey, look at me!)
Notable Hands

Coach Comments
The results from last week are satisfactory, but a worrying habit appears to be creeping into Ryan`s game - that is getting involved with terrible hands, such as flopping middle pair. Poker players rationalize these plays in the following way: "It was a semi-bluff", "I was pretty sure the other guy had nothing", and maybe it starts out as a bluff, and maybe the other guy did have nothing, but the point is YOU HAVE VERY LITTLE. In terms of defending that hand down to the river you can so easily be caught. The same problem exists with top pair and no kicker. That`s why you should fold garbage like A-little card more times than not. When you do hit the Ace you feel committed but have no protection in the hand unless you get lucky. We do not play poker from that position. We take the vantage point of skill first, luck second. No poker player should allow these kind of bad habits to infect their play - fold that crap!
