We Take A Step Back - But That Too Is Poker

23 May 2006

The path of true winning poker never ran smooth. Jennifer Harman built up her bankroll to six figures when she started out in Vegas only to lose every cent in a single terrible year. She had to borrow a stake and start out again at the bottom playing low-stakes limit games. And for the past month our student has seen his bankroll drop below the $1,000 mark with a series of atypical poor results.

It happens all the time, of course. The strange part is that it didn`t happen sooner to us, and that we started out by winning steadily. But we`re not going to panic, and there are vital lessons to learn that every poker player can benefit from.

The first lesson is to try and protect your bankroll. You might resent it but it is no longer possible to play $200 tournaments with a $400 bankroll. That only gives you two chances to win and that isn`t enough in tournament poker. Yes, you`re good enough to play at that level but what you really need is to drop down to the $20 level and punish weak players. You must restore your bankroll to a healthy level where the money on the table doesn`t matter as much to you as it does to the next guy.

The second lesson is to build up positive momentum, which occurs when you cash in or hopefully win. A win is a win, someone in sports once said and wasn`t he the philosophical one. But it`s true you know. A win at a $10 SNG feels as good and boosts the old confidence as much as a $100 win. The euphoria lasts a little longer with the latter, but the message is the same - you can win at poker, and you are the best. So we need to create those good vibes by learning how to win once again.

Finally you need to retain your enthusiasm and passion for poker. That means you go in with a good attitude, and you continue to learn by reading as much as you can. Don`t disparage your opponents or think less of them. Either they beat you with good play (pay attention and learn from it) or they beat you with bad play (be thankful for bad players, you need them to win and you`ll catch them later for double what they caught you for). If you are not positive about poker do not play. There will always be a game, tomorrow and the next day. Wait until you want to win.
