A Chip And A Chair
|
27 February 2007
February 27 - Justice is generally in short supply at a poker table, and online where life tends to be brutal and short (to paraphrase Hobbes - the thinker, not the tiger) it sometimes seems completely absent. Not so a few minutes ago when an incredible Sit N Go tournament took place at Poker Stars.
The protagonist, we`ll call him "me" to keep it simple, started off winning a small pot with AQ and was then dealt JJ in middle position. The blinds were still 10/20 (starting stacks are 1500, and at this point I had 1610).
I raised pre-flop to 80 and got 2 callers behind me, the cut-off and the button. The flop came 6s-3h-9c rainbow. I bet 120 and both players called. The turn was an 8 of clubs. I was sure I had the best hand at this point and bravely pushed all-in.
The first player wisely folded but the button called for all his chips, and most of mine, with 6c-7c. I am not sure how he found the will to call after the flop, but calling all-in on the straight-flush draw is common enough online.
I was a favorite even though he did have plenty of outs. He hit his flush and I was left with 110 chips.
From that point on an amazing thing happened, namely that I could not lose a hand. I went all-in straight away with Q6 suited and it held up against AJ. Then it was QT suited hitting the flush followed by AA, which doubled me up to 1000 chips against the same flush drawing fella from before.
In fact, even though he was the chip leader with 3000 chips and I had 110 after out first run-in he was ultimately the first player knocked out! That was a satisfying moment, possibly in the Top 10 of my whole embittered existence.
I went on to win the tournament and transcripts of the entire hand history are available. It`s an incredible saga that you had to see to believe, but that won`t stop me writing about it.
The next time you are faced with the chip and a chair take heart. That`s what I`d like you to take from this little meandering blog. Also, it seems to me that some seats at Poker Stars tournaments seem pre-ordained. It`s as though they are Calvinist seats, or to put it another way there is a shield around your chair that no asteroid can break through...
