Eastgate Proves 2008 WSOP Win No Fluke
|
07 October 2009
October 7 - Peter Eastgate is a 22-year old under more pressure than most to prove to the world that he has skills. He was the latest surprise winner of the World Series of Poker, and since that amazing effort in 2008 he has done what most of the winners of the Main Event have done - donated back a lot of those winnings to true poker pros. This is done in an effort to prove to everyone and oneself of course that the win was not a fluke, a flash in the pan, a lottery ticket with all the right numbers.
We`ve seen it a number of times before, with players like Chris Moneymaker (awful) and Jamie Gold (awful and obnoxious). Raymer is a decent mid-level pro who has held his head and many chins up high. Joe Hachem turned out to be the only world-class player with a world-class title. Don`t even get me started on the Asian dude who won (Wang, Yang - whatever - the one messed up Yahoo and the other messed up poker, unless they`re the same person?).
Into this mix comes Eastgate, who played well enough to win, but subsequently has been schooled by the big boys, particularly in cash games where he has looked way out of his depth. But he has millions of dollars to comfort himself with, plus big sponsorship deals, and he got to move to London, which is a big upgrade from Odense.
Now Eastgate has a chance to prove his detractors wrong as he has played great tournament poker (which he should stick to in my opinion) to make it to the final table of an EPT event. The EPT is like the WPT but in Europe for those of you wondering what the acronym means. The latest EPT stop is in London, so Eastgate has home felt advantage. It is sponsored by Poker Stars, and he is currently in second spot going in to the final day of play.
The chip leader is way ahead of him, Eastgate feels the pressure now, and probably won`t win here, but he has what it takes to win big again, so we`re not writing off the pensive young Dane (aren`t they all? Another palpable hit for Willie S.) just yet. Watch this space for more about Eastgate.
