New Hope for US Online Poker Players
|
08 February 2009
February 8 - Last year, US politician Barney Frank was nearly successful in introducing HR 2046 to congress, which called for a legal and regulatory framework for the online poker and casino industry in the country. Unfortunately, although he had the support of 48 co-sponsors, the bill was not dealt with because of the pressing economic events that occurred towards the end of the year.
This week, Barney Frank announced that the time was right to reintroduce the bill and this would be done within a few weeks.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Frank - who serves as the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee - said that he had high hopes in the new Obama administration and expected them to act more rationally their predecessors when it came to online gambling. "I expect an Obama DoJ to be less zealous about locking people up," he said. "These outrageous arrests in transit - they should be stopping this stuff."
Frank was, of course, referring to the arrest of David Carruthers, former head of SportingBet, who was arrested for being involved in online gambling operations, while flying into the United States on a transit stopover in 2006.
Barney Frank is hopeful that the US poker scene will benefit from the Obama government`s decision to rescind a large number of `midnight rules` pushed through in the dying days of the Bush administration. This week the government held a meeting to discuss the process of examining these rules, and Frank believes there is a good chance that the UIGEA will be included in the laws chosen to re-examine.
Should Congressman Frank`s efforts be successful, it could mark the beginning of a legal and regulated US poker industry, something that the millions of poker players in the country have been demanding for years.
