Obama Challenged to a Poker Match by Bluefire Poker
|
12 March 2009
March 12 - President Obama, known for his skill in the game of poker, may have just received an offer that he cannot refuse. In a bid to draw attention to the ongoing skill versus chance debate surrounding poker, the online poker tutorial site, Bluefire Poker has challenged the President, as well as other members of Congress, to play against its team of highly skilled professionals.
Bluefire Poker is so positive that none of the politicians will be able to beat the pros in the long run, that it has guaranteed to donate $1 million to a charity of the politician`s choice if he or she does actually win.
And President Obama or his people on the Hill needn`t worry about their own investment. Bluefire Poker is going one step further with its generosity and asking that the opponents deposit put up just $1.
Bill Murphy, speaking for Bluefire, explained the poker site`s motives. "We wanted to make a move to pressure Congress to do something," he said. "As a public relations move, we wanted to drive home the point that poker is a game of skill. If it wasn`t a game of skill, anyone would accept this bet."
The actual infrastructure of the Bluefire poker challenge has not yet been established, probably because the site is trying to calculate what would constitute a reasonable length of time for the challenge to carry on for without a win being a one-off stroke of the luck for the opponent.
"I`m not sure if we`d do a best of seven series or something like that," said Murphy. "We also have to determine how quickly the blinds would escalate. We haven`t thought about the exact details."
Whatever the outcome of this campaign, Bluefire Poker is hoping that it will raise the necessary awareness that online poker is indeed a game of skill and should therefore be legalized and regulated by the US Congress.
