PokerRoom Shuts Down
|
18 April 2009
April 18 - The online poker industry sees an end of an era as one of the first poker sites ever created, PokerRoom announced this week that it was closing its doors for good.
The site`s official blog announced: "Well folks, after almost ten years of fun and games, it is with a heavy heart and tear in my eye, that I have to announce that this is it: as of 11.00 CET today, Tuesday the 14th of April 2009, PokerRoom will no longer be open for online poker."
Launched in 1999 by Claes Lidell and Oskar Hornell, PokerRoom enjoyed massive popularity, especially in the United States where it was once considered to be the most famous site on the internet.
PokerRoom was one of the first online poker rooms to use 3D technology, making it even more attractive to players seeking innovative and realistic gaming environments.
All this changed in 2006, however, when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was introduced in the United States and the PokerRoom was forced to leave this market in which it had such a strong foothold.
The PokerRoom enjoyed relative success in other markets until it finally admitted defeat and ended its operations this week with its dramatic statement.
The PokerRoom has urged all its players to play at the bwin poker website, offering them some amazing incentives for transferring their cash to bwin.com.
Players, however, were also told that they could cash out their funds from the PokerRoom accounts.
