September 8 - The winner of the
2006 WSOP Main Event, Jamie Gold, can now claim
half of his $12 million winnings thanks to an agreement that Gold's lawyers came
to with the lawyers of Bruce Crispin Leyser, who is suing Gold for half of
his winnings.
In the lawsuit, Leyser is claiming that he and Gold entered into an informal
business agreement before the 2006 WSOP Main Event that in exchange for
supplying celebrities to sport the logo of online gambling site,
Bodog.com, he
would get half of Gold's WSOP winnings.
Gold is denying the validity of this agreement.
When lawyers representing Leyser filed the lawsuit against Gold, they also
requested the court to 'freeze' the $12 million until the matter had been
rectified. As a result, the money has remained at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and
Casino.
Both sides have now agreed to a court injunction that will allow half of the
money to be 'unfrozen' until the court case is concluded. Gold's lawyers have
until September 15th to challenge the injunction once it has been signed
by US District court Judge, Roger Hunt.
