2009 WSOP Shapes Up As A Record-Breaker

Author: Renee

June 3 - After kicking off in Las Vegas last week, it didn't take long for the very talented bunch of players at the World Series of Poker event to start breaking records.

WSOP decided to introduce a $40,000 buy in no limit Texas Hold 'em tournament in honor of the event's 40th anniversary and the interest in this event was overwhelming. Two hundred and one poker players descended on this event which broke the record for the biggest prize pool in a non Main Event tournament, resulting in a prize pool of a whopping $7,7 million.

After four days where some of the most talented players in the industry battled it out for the title, Vitaly Lunkin from Moscow beat Isaac Haxton from the US and took home a staggering $1.89 million for his efforts.

Lunkin is a former WSOP bracelet holder, while Greg Raymer - 2004 Main Event bracelet winner - came in third place.

The event that attracted the most number of players thus far is event number 4, billed as 'stimulus special', and which has broken the record for the largest non WSOP Main Event tournament ever played.

"The demand for the Stimulus Special could be felt the moment we announced it," recalls Jeffrey Pollack, President and Commissioner for the World Series of Poker.

All in all, 6012 entries were received and 621 spots will be paid out in the $1000 buy in Stimulus Special. At that rate, each participant at the final table will receive a six figure prize - at least - and the total prize pool stands at $5.4 million.

The event was divided into two and Day 1a saw a huge field of 2,992 players decimated at the incredible rate of 4.36 players per minute!

3,020 players took part in Day 1b.

The top players slated to win in the competition this year include Patrik Antonius, Michael Binger, Tom Dwan and Justin Bonomo.
