75 000 Reasons why Not to Bluff by Patrik Antonius
|
November 12 - Now everybody knows that poker is a game of luck, skill, chance
and patience, but it's the ability to make a balls-to-the-wall bluff and get
away with it that separates the men from the boys. Unfortunately for Finnish
poker pro, Patrik 'FinddaGrind' Antonius, a recent online poker bluff cost him
$75 000.
Last Sunday evening, Antonius was playing at a high-stakes $200/$400 Pot-Limit
Omaha poker game at leading online poker room, Full Tilt Poker, along with four
other players including fellow pros Gus Hansen, Dustin Dirksen and Frenchman,
David Benyamine, when a bombastic bluff went belly up.
Antonius kicked off the action during the hand in question by raising to $1 400.
Not to be outdone, Benyamine re-raised up to $4 800 from the button which caused
all the other players to fold except Antonius, who called, setting the scene for
some vigorous heads-up action.
Both players checked after the flop came showing 2d-5s-Qs. The turn brought a 5d
and Antonius made his move by checking, and then raising to a massive $28 400,
after Benyamine had bet $10 200.
Seemingly unperturbed, the Frenchman called the raise and, when a Jc came with
the river, faced a hefty $42 400 bet from Antonius, which yet again, Benyamine
calmly called.
When both set of cards were revealed, it soon became clear that Antonius' bluff
had bombed as Benyamine took the pot of $151 797 with three 5s, and all the Fin
had to show for his $75 000 worth of aggressive betting was a lousy pair of 4s.
Talk about 75 000 reasons why not to bluff.
