8390 Signatures Oppose Online Poker Ban
|
October 13 - California-based corporate attorney, Jim Perkins, is helping
American online poker players fight for their right to play online poker by
spearheading an online petition against the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act that was recently passed by Congress.
Since the petition was posted on Monday, October 2nd, it has grown to 8390
signatures from poker players opposed to the online gambling, and thus,
online poker ban.
Perkins, himself a keen poker player, said that once the legislation was passed
he felt strongly enough about the issue to put together the petition.
Perkins has addressed the petition to all members of Congress and the Senate,
which reads:
'We would like to register our strong disagreement with and disapproval of the
recently enacted bill regarding the prohibition and/or regulation of internet
gambling. The bill was originally introduced in the House of Representatives by
Representative Goodlatte and was attached to 'must pass' legislation in the
Senate by Senator Frist.
'We strongly believe that the government should not attempt to prohibit online
gambling by adults. We favor legalization, regulation and taxation of online
gambling by the government of the United States.'
Said Perkins, 'People (Americans) who want to gamble online will gamble online.
I believe that through passing a bill that attempts to prohibit people from
engaging in an activity that many millions of people clearly want to engage in,
the government is driving the activity underground and creating the likelihood
of greater harm.'
If you would like to sign the petition and support your right for the freedom to
gamble online, you can find it here:
