About the Coach

Author: Marc Weinberg - The Coach

Let me begin by saying that I feel that there is a lot left for me to learn about poker, and that my journey to become a better poker player is nowhere near the end. It's axiomatic that No-limit hold'em is easy to learn and impossible to master, or that it takes a few minutes to pick up and a lifetime to master. You get the point - I am not a Master, but I do feel that I am qualified to guide a Novice from raw-Rookie status to the level at which I currently play.

Hopefully, by the time Ryan reaches my level (the glorious Level 7 of the Experiment) I will have moved on to still higher, more lofty levels. Otherwise it will really suck for me. I don't want to buy-in to a $300 sit and go tournament only to find Ryan sitting there across from me. But I intend to see him play and win at that level, and make thousands of dollars PROFIT in the process.

Poker is not about entertainment. It's not casino gambling where you put aside an amount you can afford to lose and have fun with it. There is no fun in poker. It is a game where you want to win money and grow your bankroll - end of story. Who am I to teach Ryan and other novices how to play poker? I am one of the very few poker players that makes a consistent and meaningful profit on a monthly basis.

I have played against the very best tournament poker players in the world. I have earned their respect, and left with a tidy profit. I make money playing poker, and believe that I can teach anyone who has the discipline, the analytical ability, the stones, and the time to devote to this pursuit, to do the same.

My results this year include no-limit tournament poker wins at the Bellagio No-Limit Poker Event, and the Super Satellite for the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship (WPT event, also oddly enough at the Bellagio where I am clearly "course suited"). I have also won numerous online tournaments, comprised of fields as large as 600 players, and offering substantial prize money. Poker is a game of fluctuation. A lot of you will know someone, or claim to be someone who wins six-figure sums playing online poker. A lot of those players fail to mention that they also lose six-figure sums, and that those latter sums are as big as or bigger than their wins.

The poker bubble surrounds the players not the companies. I would say that 90% of online poker players lose overall, and that eventually the rake eats up all but the best in the business. 90% of those obnoxious college kids living the dream are all going to have to wake up and get real jobs, just like most of those obnoxious dot-commers had to do a few years back...

My story is that I win despite fluctuations. It isn't a six-figure amount yet by any means, but it is an ever-increasing bankroll. I constantly strive to improve my game, and because the learning / teaching process is so symbiotic anyway in poker, I am more than happy to pass on that "knowledge" to you. Very little in poker is actually knowledge - a lot of acts are subject to interpretation, right in one situation but fatal in another, and player A might make a move that works whereas in the hands of Player B it is an unmitigated disaster. The game is part Science, bigger part Artistry, and a sizeable portion of Fortune thrown in as well.

We can make money at poker, and we can do it without winning the lottery (ie: appearing on television at the final table of the WSOP or WPT and then disappearing off the face of the poker earth forever). Any poker player can get lucky and earn one huge payday, but even those guys need to know what they are doing. I can give you those tools, and get you winning consistently, which should be your goal after all.
