Alex Rodriguez Admonished For Playing Poker
|
Alex Rodriguez has been warned by the Yankees to stop frequenting underground poker clubs in New York. The Manhattan based poker clubs are illegal and unregulated. They tend to be shut down in raids by the police, and have also been robbed in the past. Why doesn't A-Rod just play online poker like the rest of us? Simple answer - because for Alex it's all about seeming cool.
We reported last week that Alex Rodriguez was seen hanging out at the biggest poker game in the universe, the $4000-$8000 mixed game played daily in Bobby's room at the Bellagio poker room. He was just a wide-eyed spectator then, but clearly A-Rod has been bitten by the poker bug. Like other celebrity poseurs who feel that poker is cool (ahem, Ben Affleck) Rodriguez was playing some small-stakes poker the other night at one of the illegal poker clubs. He was involved for only $5000, a pittance when you make $5000 a second, or whatever it is that he makes, but still baseball is concerned.
Interestingly, baseball is concerned because they feel that poker is gambling, and that no baseball player can come within a mile of gambling post Pete Rose. But, poker is not gambling, and anyone who believes that is welcome to play against an Online Poker Insider anytime. But that's too nuanced a discussion to have with the MLB, who are only interested in subtle arguments and sophistry when it comes to steroid abuse in sports.
