California Could Introduce Intrastate Online Poker
|
June 29 - The state of California is looking for a new way to help its budget and bring online poker to its citizens. To avoid running afoul of federal law, California would be looking to start intrastate online poker rooms. All concerned elements would have to be in-state to avoid a run-in with federal law. This would be most easily implemented by allowing tribal casinos and poker room operators that are already licensed in-state to operate the new online poker rooms.
California is suffering from a $25 billion deficit in its budget, and the bill, introduced by ex-Assemblyman Lloyd Levine could bring in as much as $250 million. As a result, the debate about the morality of gambling and extending the availability of gambling is quickly being dropped in favor of the search for solvency in California.
Representatives from the Poker Voters of America have been told that the bill will pass if it meets consumer protection requirements. PVA president Jim Tabilio said "The framework bill has a majority in support of the concept in both the Assembly and the Senate, and has a group of legislators including people in the leadership in both houses ready to take it forward. This means we're probably going to be able to get the bill through in mid-summer."
If this bill passes in California, it may be just the beginning of a new form of online gambling in the United States as other states will likely adopt similar laws in order to meet their own budgetary needs.
