Gavin Smith - World Poker Tour Player Of The Year

It's high time we wrote an article about Gavin Smith, and what better reason to publish a Gavin Smith bio than the recent news that the WPT has named him as their player of the year for 2005.

Unlike our recent efforts with various poker babes we won't end the article with a sexy photo. We don't need the fluff here because Gavin Smith's record in major poker tournaments is impressive stand-alone stuff.

The rotund Canadian showed incredible talent throughout 2005 when he made not one or two but three final tables on the World Poker Tour. He finished fourth at the World Poker Open and third in the Doyle Brunson North American Championship, held in Las Vegas at the Bellagio. But his best achievement was his first place finish and maiden WPT win at the Mirage Open.

Smith is well known for his ability to play any two cards and to outplay his opponents after the flop. He is very aggressive and understands board texture better than most players in the world.

Gavin Smith racked up earnings in excess of $1,600,000 in those three World Poker Tour outings alone and he commands plenty of respect from fellow pros.

He also endorses Full Tilt Poker, and that poker room can now make the claim that all three WPT Players Of The Year are shills for their room alone! Howard Lederer won the award in the first year of the tour's existence, and last year that honor went to Erick Lindgren.

If Full Tilt wants to make it four players in a row they should think about signing Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi, who is an early pick to win the player of the year title for 2006, based on his hot start to the current season. Another logical contender would be Barry Greenstein, but only time will tell who wins it this time around.
