October 12 - The Danish world champion of poker, Peter Eastgate was left
defeated in the European Poker Tour London event after a stunning victory by the
young American online poker player, Aaron Gustavson.
The 23 year old Gustavson, who entered the competition by winning a qualifier
tournament at popular online poker site,
PokerStars, stunned even himself by
winning the quickest heads up battle ever seen in European Poker Tour history.
The drama took place in the Main Event of the London leg of the current
EPT, with a massive GBP 5,300 buy in.
730 players took part in the event, making it the largest land tournament to
be played in the United Kingdom.
"I'm speechless, totally overwhelmed," said Gustavson, who goes under the
online handle aguskb, after the game. "I don't think it's going to hit me for
quite a while. Having this title is amazing - a dream come true."
The heads up match lasted only seven hands and an incredible fifteen minutes,
enough time for Gustavson to take home the EPT title and a staggering £850,000 first prize.
This is the young player's first major trophy of his career.
Several months ago, Gustavson won the PokerStars Sunday WarmUp and took home
$145,000 for his efforts.
Yet, he could never have dreamed of beating one of the best players in the
world, Peter Eastgate, who won the 2008 World Series of Poker championship.
"Amazing," said Gustavson, summing up the victory. "I couldn't ask for more.
It's what every poker player dreams to do."
