Jason Mercier Wins Pot Limit Omaha Bracelet at WSOP
|
June 6 - After a dramatic final table where he was up against some serious poker talent, Jason Mercier took home his first World Series of Poker bracelet by winning the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha game.
The PLO win is a stamp on Mercier's poker career, in which he has risen in a meteoric fashion.
Mercier became a household name when he won the second European Poker Tournament final table in San Remo and took home over $1.3 million last year.
He ventured around the final table in the second EPT event in 2008, and went on to make incredible winnings during the course of the year, including the European Poker Tour High Rollers Event in London - taking home $944,847 for his efforts.
But one thing was missing from Mercier's list - a WSOP bracelet.
"My only goal when I came to the World Series was to win a bracelet," said Mercier.
And win his did. After a rough start at the final table of the Pot Limit Omaha #5 event, Mercier was back in the game after he got the chip lead.
"I lost half my chips pretty early," he recalled. "I was able to win a few key pots in a row and get some momentum going and once I got the chip lead, I never looked back."
Finally, it was Mercier against Steven Burkholder - who Mercier refers to as "a real nice guy" - but Mercier had an edge and eventually turned a full house to win the title and the money.
"I came here to win a bracelet," quipped Mercier. "Now I guess I should set my goals higher, like four bracelets or something!"
