LAPT Mexico Stop Cancelled

PokerStarsDecember 9 - What was meant to be an exciting few days in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico as poker professionals from the area came together to play in the Mexican stop of the Latin American Poker Tour, turned sour when authorities put an end to the tournament.

After running for two days, the tournament was unexpectedly put on hold and the LAPT hosts, PokerStars, were forced to announce that the competition would not run its course. 242 participants had signed up for the LAPT Nuevo Vallarta stop, and after 48 hours, 89 were still very much in the competition.

On Sunday night, after participants required to know whether authorities would allow the tournament to continue or not, PokerStars released a statement that read: "The Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) confirms that it is canceling the poker tournament in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, due to an indefinite suspension served on one of its local partners."

Addressing concerns that the tournament did not comply with local Mexican law regarding poker tournaments, PokerStars said in its statement: "The LAPT states it has cooperated fully and in good faith with the requirements outlined by the Mexican government. The LAPT respects and abides by local regulations in each market."

The remaining 89 participants who had flocked to Mexico to take part in the tournament will be compensated by PokerStars, according to the statement. Besides having their PokerStars accounts credited for $500, each would receive $5000 cash (double their buy in). The rest of the prize pool would be divided based on chip counts.
