Local Lad Wins 2008 Irish Poker Championship

January 9 - When it came down to the final table of the highly anticipated 2008 PartyPoker Irish Poker Championship, hosted at a Radisson Hotel in the quant Irish city of Galway last week, it was local lad Jude Ainsworth who came out tops and 180 000 Euros richer.

Born and bred in Claregalway, a small Irish town barely 10 miles from Galway,  Ainsworth, who is 28, married and a proud dad, is currently studying for a PhD in Biochemistry (between winning super lucrative and highly prestigious PartyPoker poker tournaments, of course).

After the 2008 PartyPoker Irish Poker Championship got under way, with loads of adrenalin-pumping, high action poker play, it was just a matter of time before the almost 300 entrants were whittled down to a lucky and skilful few to make it to the final table, Ainsworth included.

The mood was electric and the atmosphere tense as the players bet, raised, called and bluffed to get ahead. However, eventually there remained only two in a captivating heads-up poker showdown between Jude Ainsworth and well-known poker professional, Michael McCool.

But when it call came down to was a single hand, where Ainsworth got lucky on the river to flop a straight to beat McCool's pocket fives and secure his place as the 2008 PartyPoker Irish Poker Champion, as well as the much-deserved owner of 180 000 Euros ($265 000).

Said Ainsworth after his victory, 'I am thrilled to have won a poker tournament as prestigious and generous as this, and really couldn't ask for more than that except, perhaps, for a few pints down the pub! I want to take some time off once I get my PhD and this prize money will certainly help.'

The 2008 PartyPoker Irish Poker Championship is scheduled to be broadcast on RTÉ, the Irish national TV broadcaster, in February this year, and further afield at a later stage this year.
