NCAA Clears Callathes On Online Gambling Charges

November 17 - The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) announced last week that it had investigated allegations that a member of the University of Florida basketball team had wagered illegally online, and promptly cleared the star after it was found that he had not committed any NCAA violation.

The story first came to light after it was reported that UF guard, Nick Callathes, was under investigation by the NCAA for wrongdoing.

Callathes allegedly lost $600 by playing online poker and this was brought to the NCAA's attention, which started the investigation.

While Callathes admitted to playing online poker, he was absolutely adamant that he had done nothing wrong.

The NCAA backed him up and found that playing online poker violated none of the association's rules, and therefore no further action would be taken. Under NCAA regulations, players are not allowed to take part in any form of sportsbetting, however, there is no mention of online poker.

A statement released over the weekend by the athletics director of the University of Florida, Jeremy Foley, said: "We became aware of certain allegations over the weekend and immediately looked into it. We reviewed everything very thoroughly and are satisfied with our results. We have no eligibility issues and are very comfortable that this issue is resolved based on our review."

The team's coach, Billy Donavan also commented on the issue. "The unfortunate part in all this is that nobody on our team has done anything wrong," he said. "It's amazing to me a story can actually be written or talked about when someone has done nothing wrong."
