Online Poker Player Grabs Canadian Open Title

May 20 - It was the day of victory for online poker amateur Benjamin LaBlond who whizzed through the finals of the Canadian Poker Open Championships this week to eventually take home the title.

LaBlond beat all the odds when he reached the head to head match against the youngest player to ever win a World Series of Poker Main Event bracelet, Jeff Madsen.

To get to that point, LaBlond took down some of the tournament's best players, including Brad Booth and Phil Hellmuth along the way until reaching the final game against Madsen.

The amateur from Quebec said that he has received all his experience playing at online poker sites and was pleased that he had managed to grab the title despite his lack of live poker tournament time.

"It's definitely different, playing against real players instead of sitting at the computer," commented LaBlond. "My confidence has grown a lot because of this tournament."

LaBlond took home $100K in tax free prize money for grabbing the title of the competition, while his rival, Madsen won just over half that amount.

"It's been a really good tournament, I feel good, I did well," said Madsen. "I almost didn't come here because I was trying to rest myself for the World Series of Poker Event in Las Vegas, but now I'm really glad I did."

Madsen and the rest of the professionals need to watch their back, however. Benjamin LaBlond intends using his prize money to pay the $10K entrance fee into the WSOP Main Event in order to try his luck and hone his skills in the land poker industry's most prestigious competition.

"It's about reinvesting in the trade!" quipped LaBlonde.
