Online Poker Room Declares Poker A Game of Skill
|
March 30 - Cigital Inc. released the results of a comprehensive study to determine once and for all whether poker should be considered a game of skill or a game of chance.
The study, taken in conjunction with PokerStars, examined the data from over 100 million hands of poker played at the site over a certain period of time and proved equivocally what the experts have been saying for a long time: The outcome of a game of poker is determined more by the choices made by a player (ie. his or her skills) than by the chance factor.
The report, entitled the Statistical Analysis of Texas Hold 'em, was greeted with satisfaction by many poker proponents across the board, both in the online and offline sectors of the industry.
The Executive Director of the one million member strong Poker Players Alliance (PPA), John Pappas said: "The question of whether poker is a game of predominant skill or chance is not about the player's ego, but the nature and the legal protections of the game. In courtrooms across the country, judges and juries are finding that poker is a game of skill - not chance like lotteries and slot machines - and this study confirms that fact."
Indeed, it is hoped that the Statistical Analysis of Texas Hold 'em will be able to assist the PPA win cases in the United States in areas where poker is still considered an illegal pastime. The chances of that happening are as close to zero as one could imagine, but it sure is nice that these people live in a state of hope.
The Chairman of the Poker Players Alliance, the former Senator Alfonse D'Amato said about the results: "As a poker player I can tell that knowing when to hold or fold is not based solely on the cards that are dealt, but a series of decisions based on skill and the actions taken by the other players. This study provides the raw data to back up the compelling arguments made by poker players around the world that it's skill, not pure luck, that determines the outcome of this game."
