Phil Hellmuth Loses $69 000 on Bad Bluff
|
September 14 - Even the world's top-rated poker professionals sometimes make
costly mistakes, such as high-roller poker pro Phil Hellmuth who recently lost
$69 000 in a 'bad bluff' on a recent episode of TV poker show, High Stakes Poker.
On the show, the players have a standing prop bet that if they win a hand
holding a 7 and a 2 (deuce), they can collect $500 from every player at the
table. Clearly Phil Hellmuth thought this was 'easy pickings' as he picked up
the 7h-2h.
He duly raised the pot to $2200 expecting everyone to fold and thus collect the
winnings from the prop bet. However, amateur player Mike Baxter had other ideas
and called the intimidating Hellmuth with Jh-10c.
When the flop came, it showed Qc-9d-5s, giving Baxter an open-ended straight
draw and Hellmuth 'nada'. Not a player used to backing down, Hellmuth put his
bluffing strategy into action and bet $6000, which unsurprisingly Baxter called.
The turn revealed a 10h, giving Baxter an additional pair of 10s and Hellmuth
still nothing. However, this did not prevent Hellmuth from taking his bluffing
strategy a step further and betting a whopping $17 000.
Expecting Baxter to buckle at the knees, Hellmuth encapsulated his bet with the
statement, 'I know you have 10-J, and I know you're calling already. I'm
charging the max, the river will be cheaper.'
But for who is the question, because sure enough Baxter called eventually,
bringing a 6d on the river and a quick and nasty $44 000 bet from Hellmuth, who
had been drawing dead on the hand since the turn.
Sensing the bluff, Baxter called and won the hand and the gigantic pot with his
pair of tens which cost Phil 'Poker Brat' Hellmuth no less than $69 200. In true
Hellmuth fashion, the sulky pro pointed out to anyone that would listen around
the table that he is used to playing pros and not amateurs.
