May 13 - Jack "Papa Jack" Hinchey, who has been playing poker for
thirty years, was the lucky winner of the World Poker Crown Tournament that took
place in Spain last week.
Hinchey, 49, who is a plumber by profession, flew home to his native Oshawa,
Canada this week and was greeted by crowds of friends and family who promptly
crowned him with a plastic tiara.
His beaming mother told reporters: "I'm really happy for him. We've been in
little poker tournaments before in Oshawa and I've beaten him!"
Hinchey competed online at 888.com with nearly 3000 contestants to stand in
line to win a seat at the World Poker Crown Tournament final table last week.
Hinchley has spent the past year practicing at online poker sites for up to four
hours a day in get him in shape for this tournament.
The grand finale took place at the luxurious Perlada Castle in Barcelona,
Spain and Hinchey was in good company, as three other contestants from Canada
also made up the ten final places at the World Poker Crown Tournament.
"The final hand, I had a King and Queen which held up," said an ecstatic
Hinchey, "I just tried to play aggressively all the way through and it paid
off."
Hinchey is not sure what his immediate plans for the future are. "I haven't
had any time to think about all this," he said. "It's all been so fast."
However, he has said that he will most likely retire from his job - although he
will give his boss two months notice. "My goal was to put my granddaughter
through university," said Hinchey, referring to 10 year old Victoria. And with
$1 million in the bank, it looks like Papa Jack is going to see his dream come
true.
