Poker Old Timer Involved in Robbery
|
October 11 - One of the greatest living poker legends of all time,
Amarillo
Slim, narrowly escaped injury when he was involved in an attempted burglary
while driving around in the town of Amarillo, Texas.
The 78-year-old Amarillo Slim, real name Thomas Preston, was driving down a
quiet Amarillo street at approximately a quarter past one in the morning when a
'yellow car' cut him off forcing him to pull over.
An unknown passenger allegedly got out of the yellow car and approached Slim
holding a gun. When the robber demanded money, Slim slammed his car into reverse and
fled the scene.
However, the gunman managed to fire three shots at the fleeing poker
legend. While the robbers attempted to follow Slim, he gave them the slip and
managed to call local police for assistance.
Police reported finding two bullet holes in Slim's car. Apparently, lady luck was
smiling down at the well-known card shark, sparing his life to play poker
another day.
Amarillo Slim won the World Series of Poker in 1972.
