Poker Sites on Australian Government Ban List

wikileaks online pokerMarch 23 - When the Australian government announced its intention to ban a number of internet sites, the move was met by a roar of disapproval by the general public who opposed the move on their freedom of choice.

Nevertheless, the government suggested that 1,300 internet sites should not be allowed to be accessed by the public and went ahead with its plans to compile the list.

The watchdog group, Wikileaks.com, managed to gain a copy of the list and published it in its entirety this week, showing that not only is the number of sites almost double what the government suggested (over 2,300), but it also contains the names of popular poker sites that enjoy a huge Australian following.

Some of the poker sites on the list include PokerStars and William Hill Poker, leading to outrage among the online poker community.

Even poker news sites have not been left in peace, and sites such as PokerNews.com are also on the hit list.

The government is now left red faced over the leak, which it tried to keep under wraps for as long as possible. In fact, media outlets were even threatened with an $11,000 fine for publishing the list before official permission was granted.

The internet censorship move has been met with opposition by all walks of Australian society, even by one of the country's most fervent anti-gambling politician, Senator Nick Xenophon. The senator originally backed the plan but admitted that after taking a good look at what it entailed, he realized that it would be a waste of taxpayers money to try and enforce it.

It remains to be seen whether the government will succeed in blocking so many good poker sites from Australians, especially following a report which showed that Australians gamble more online than residents of any other country in the world.
