A Day in the Life of an Online Poker Lobbyist
|
July 27 - As National Poker Week wound to an end and Poker Players Alliance (PPA) lobbyists gathered together to discuss how their blitz campaign in Washington went this week, it was interesting to read an interview given by one of the more active lobbyists, Mickey Leibner.
Leibner, who works with former Congressman Toby Moffett, believes in the online poker regulation cause to the point that he felt that he needed to be among those campaigning for its regulation and legalization in the United States.
Leibner described how lobbying consists of hard, sometimes snail paced work in order to get the most important information out to the right people. "You're want to make sure you're using the right arguments with a rural Republican Representative and those are probably different arguments than you'd use with an urban Democrat, for example," he said.
Leibner described the process of preparing information for these representatives, including crafting memos for staff and keeping up to date with the most relevant news on the topic.
When asked what he thought about the future of online poker in the United States in the coming year, Leibner said: "We're very hopeful and we're very confident that we can get these laws passed. We have a lot of powerful people on our side, including Barney Frank who who is the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. It just so happens that we're in the midst of the biggest financial crisis in the past few decades. We're confident that our message is getting through."
Part of the PPA's message is that a regulated and legalized industry can bring in millions of dollars in taxation for the US government - money that is badly needed to get the country through the current crisis that Leibner describes.
