All Africa Poker Tournament A Small Success - 11-22-07
|
Author: Marc
November 22 - The All Africa Poker Tournament is billed as the biggest poker tournament on the darkest continent. How big is it? Well 111 players each coughed up R35,000, which is a little over $5,400, to play in a tournament where the first prize was R1,000,000 in cash plus a package to the WSOP Main Event in 2008.
Poker players around the world will remember the incredible effort in last year's World Series Main Event by Raymond Rahme, the old-timer from South Africa who eventually finished third. He was sponsored by Piggs Peak casino, which hosts the All Africa Tournament, and cut his poker tournament teeth at this very event.
There are a number of very talented African poker players, who mostly if not all hail from South Africa. The legal status of online poker in SA is grey, and so online poker operations prefer to run out of neighboring countries like Swaziland.
The latest All Africa Poker tournament was won by Greg Ronaldson - many of the players in the event were "young guns" (Ronaldson is only 24) showing that the trend towards young male players taking up serious poker is a universal one. The standard of play was decent but not spectacular, however with a host of good local players emerging on the international scene it should not be long before a South African comes home with a coveted WSOP bracelet.
Mark Vos, the talented youngster who has won a WSOP bracelet, is originally from South Africa, so he could be counted on a technicality even though he now represents Australia.
Who is my pick to win from South Africa for international glory? I'd go for one of the Ryan's, either Ryan Eber or Ryan Brauer, who have both played very well in major US events.
