Allen Cunningham - Poker Legend
|
There have been some powerful poker crews over the years, but few can rival this one: Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Daniel Negreanu, and Allen Cunningham. The four became good friends when they all started out as poker pros at roughly the same time. Interestingly, the player that was considered the best of the four, by the group itself, was Cunningham!
In fact, Allen Cunningham is a poker player's favorite, but is not nearly as well known as the other three. Put together those four players are not only the most difficult poker names to spell correctly (Ivy, Juwanda, Allan, Negranu anyone?) but they also knock the socks off other crews, most notably the pitiful bunch led by the mentally ill Dutch Boyd. These four guys are the Doyble Brunson / Sailor Roberts / Amarillo Slim of our generation, and Cunningham deserves to be included with the other three even if they have all won a lot more cash than he has.
Cunningham has enjoyed a spectacular year, however. He was awarded the ESPN Toyota 2005 World Series Of Poker player of the year, following in the the tiny footsteps of Daniel who won it in 2004. He won a bracelet in the first event at this year's WSOP, defeating a very strong final table that featured Scott "Empty Seat" Fischman, and Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott. Allen Cunningham is known as a very thoughtful and calm player, although his tendency to twitch and blink belies that calm attitude somewhat. Nervous tics aside, Cunningham is quiet and mild-mannered, and shuns the spotlight, which is another big reason why the other three members of the poker gang are all better known.
Cunningham was born in 1977 and is easily one of the five best players in the world under the age of 30. He plays cash mixed games, although not at the highest level, but has already won three world series of poker events and will almost certainly increase that number over the coming years.
