American Public Votes for Online Poker

May 14 - President Barack Obama's call to the United States public to make their voices heard about important topics that they wished him to address during his term in office, had online poker players scrambling to attention.

Using the medium put to their disposal, the White House Citizen's Briefing Book, the poker playing public voted that President Obama address the issue of online poker once and for all, declare it a game of skill and introduce a legal and regulated industry for them to enjoy.

The call for action by poker interest groups paid off and it was announced this week that the online poker issue ranked top of the technology list in the Briefing Book that was put together to commemorate 100 days of Obama being in office.

Aaron Huertas, an online poker player, summarized the general sentiments of the American public on the issue and wrote in the book: "Let online poker players in the United States play legally and without fear of prosecution. Reform the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act to exempt poker, a game of skill, from the law. Boost the economy by letting American companies and American players make money and pay taxes, instead of sending online poker businesses offshore. Protect online poker players by regulating the industry to ensure that no one is ever cheated."

Even more impressive was the fact that the issue of online poker made was the 11th most important issue overall in the White House Citizen's Briefing book, behind issues as important as health, welfare and the environment.

"Poker players around the country are speaking with one voice to protect the game they love, and the White House is hearing that message," said John Pappas, Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance.
